Medications to Avoid Before Your Allergy Test
You may be referred for allergy testing through our practice. This guide will help you prepare for your upcoming allergy test. Certain medications can interfere with test results and should be temporarily discontinued. Always consult with your healthcare provider before stopping any prescribed medications.
Medications to Stop 7 Days Before Testing
- Antihistamines:
- Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
- Zyrtec (cetirizine)
- Allegra (fexofenadine)
- Claritin (loratadine)
- Xyzal (levocetirizine)
- Clarinex (desloratadine)
- Sleep Aids:
- Tylenol PM, Advil PM
- ZzzQuil
- Unisom
- Any over-the-counter sleep medication containing diphenhydramine
Medications to Stop 5 Days Before Testing
- Antidepressants with antihistamine effects:
- Doxepin
- Amitriptyline
- Nortriptyline
- Anti-nausea medications:
- Dramamine
- Antivert (meclizine)
Medications to Stop 48 Hours Before Testing
- H2 Blockers:
- Pepcid (famotidine)
- Zantac (ranitidine)
- Tagamet (cimetidine)
Medications That Are Safe to Continue
- Asthma inhalers
- Nasal steroid sprays
- Oral steroids
- Blood pressure medications
- Heart medications
- Birth control pills
- Thyroid medications
- Diabetes medications
Important Notes
1. **DO NOT** stop taking any prescription medication without first consulting your healthcare provider
2. If you are unable to stop any of these medications, please contact our office
3. Continue taking all medications needed for heart problems, breathing problems, or seizures
4. If you are taking oral steroids, please inform the allergy staff
Emergency Medications
Always keep any rescue medications you have (like inhalers or epinephrine auto-injectors) with you, even during the test.
